iPhone storage full after deleting photos (empty Recently Deleted)

iPhone storage still full after deleting photos? Deleted photos stay in Recently Deleted for about 30 days. Empty that album to get the space back now.

By Pikondo team · Updated October 7, 2026

Pikondo review screen where marked photos can be checked before deletion

Short answer: deleted photos are not gone yet. They move to Recently Deleted and still use space for about 30 days. To get the space back now, open Photos → Albums → Recently Deleted, tap Select, then Delete All, and confirm. Recover any keepers first. This guide covers why space does not free yet, how to empty Recently Deleted, iCloud Photos caveats, and how to avoid the next full-storage warning. Pikondo is an on-device photo clutter review helper. It does not empty Recently Deleted for you, manage iCloud, or bypass the 30-day album.

Short answer: empty deleted photos on iPhone

  1. Open the Photos app and go to Albums.
  2. Scroll down and tap Recently Deleted. Unlock it with Face ID or your passcode if asked.
  3. Tap Select. Recover any photo you still want first.
  4. Tap Delete All (or select items and tap Delete), then confirm.
  5. Wait a minute, then check Settings → General → iPhone Storage. The number can take a little while to update.

Why space does not free after you delete

When you delete a photo in Photos, it usually moves to Albums → Recently Deleted. It is out of your main library, but the file still counts toward device storage until it leaves that album.

iPhone keeps items there for about 30 days so you can undo a mistake. Storage bars in Settings → General → iPhone Storage often stay high until you empty Recently Deleted or wait out that window. For a wider look at the Storage screen, see /blog/manage-iphone-storage and /blog/iphone-storage-almost-full.

How to empty Recently Deleted

  1. Open the Photos app → Albums.
  2. Open Recently Deleted (often under Utilities near the bottom).
  3. Tap Select. Choose items—or Select All if the whole album should go.
  4. Tap Delete and confirm. On some iOS versions you may see Delete All—read the prompt first.
  5. Wait a moment, then check Settings → General → iPhone Storage. Space should drop after the permanent delete finishes.

Recover keepers before you empty

Emptying is permanent for those items. If a keeper might be in the album, recover it first: Select → Recover. It returns to your library.

Only then empty what you still want gone. Full recovery steps: /blog/recover-deleted-photos-iphone. Detailed empty steps: /blog/empty-recently-deleted-photos-iphone. Basic delete flow: /blog/how-to-delete-photos-iphone.

iCloud Photos caveats

If iCloud Photos is on, items you permanently remove from Recently Deleted leave iCloud Photos after your devices sync—when you have a network and sync completes. Buying more iCloud does not empty Recently Deleted on the phone.

If iCloud Photos is off, emptying Recently Deleted frees local device storage. It does not shrink iCloud Photos usage by itself. For iCloud plan warnings, see /blog/free-up-icloud-storage. A large Other / System Data bar is a different problem—see /blog/clear-other-storage-iphone.

Prevent the next full-storage warning

Emptying Recently Deleted frees space from what you already deleted. To stay ahead, delete less clutter in the first place—and empty only after you are sure.

Short passes on screenshots (/blog/delete-iphone-screenshots), near-duplicates (/blog/delete-duplicate-photos-iphone), and blurry shots (/blog/delete-blurry-photos-iphone) help. Then empty Recently Deleted so space returns. For a fuller cleanup path, see /blog/free-up-iphone-storage and /blog/reduce-iphone-storage. Optimize vs delete: /blog/compress-photos-iphone. How Pikondo fits (and where it stops)

Pikondo is an on-device photo clutter review helper. Swipe to keep or mark screenshots, duplicates, and blurry shots, review the marked list, then confirm. Confirmed deletions follow the same Recently Deleted rules as the Photos app.

Pikondo does not empty Recently Deleted for you, manage iCloud, or bypass the 30-day album. Use Photos to clear Recently Deleted when you are sure. Use Pikondo when photo clutter is what fills the phone and you want a careful review before more items land in Recently Deleted.
