Pikondo review screen where marked photos can be checked before deletion

Optimize iPhone Storage is an iCloud Photos setting. It keeps smaller, device-sized copies of photos and videos on your iPhone while full-resolution originals stay in iCloud. This guide shows what it does, how to turn it on, what it needs, what it does not fix, and when deleting photo clutter still frees more space. Pikondo is an on-device photo clutter review helper. It does not turn on Optimize iPhone Storage, manage iCloud, empty Recently Deleted, or bypass the 30-day album.

What Optimize iPhone Storage means

When iCloud Photos is on and you choose Optimize iPhone Storage, iOS can replace full-resolution originals on the device with smaller versions. The originals stay in iCloud Photos. When you open a photo or video, the phone can download the full version over the network.

Optimize is not the same as deleting. It does not remove screenshots, duplicates, or videos you do not want. It also does not shrink your iCloud plan usage by itself—originals still count toward iCloud storage. For iCloud plan cleanup, see /blog/free-up-icloud-storage.

How to turn on Optimize iPhone Storage

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap your name, then iCloud (wording can vary by iOS), and confirm Photos / iCloud Photos is on—or open Settings → Photos and confirm iCloud Photos is enabled.
  3. In Settings → Photos, tap Optimize iPhone Storage (instead of Download and Keep Originals).
  4. Stay on Wi-Fi when you can so uploads and downloads can finish. Keep a little free local space so sync is not stuck.
  5. Optional: Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Photos later to see whether the Photos bar has shrunk after optimize has had time to run.

What you need before Optimize helps

  • iCloud Photos must be on. Optimize is an iCloud Photos storage option, not a separate cleanup tool.
  • Enough free space in your iCloud plan for the full library. If iCloud is full, originals may not upload and Optimize cannot finish its job.
  • Network access (usually Wi-Fi) so the phone can upload originals and later download full files when you need them.
  • Patience. Large libraries can take hours or days to upload and replace local copies. Optimize is not an instant free-space button.

What Optimize does not do

Optimize does not empty Recently Deleted. Items in that album still use space until you remove them or the ~30-day window ends—see /blog/empty-recently-deleted-photos-iphone and /blog/iphone-storage-full-after-deleting-photos.

It does not delete large videos, screenshots, or near-duplicates for you. If you do not want those files at all, delete them in Photos (then empty Recently Deleted). Optimize only prefers smaller local copies while originals remain in iCloud.

It does not clear Other / System Data or offload apps. Those are separate levers—see /blog/clear-other-storage-iphone and /blog/offload-unused-apps-iphone.

When deleting still frees more space

If your iPhone is almost full today and you need space for an update or camera use, delete obvious clutter first: long videos, screen recordings, screenshots, and duplicates. Then empty Recently Deleted so space returns. Guides: /blog/iphone-videos-taking-up-storage, /blog/delete-iphone-screenshots, /blog/delete-duplicate-photos-iphone, /blog/iphone-storage-almost-full.

Use Optimize when you already pay for enough iCloud, want to keep the full library, and can wait for sync. Use delete when you do not need the files. Compressing or sharing smaller copies is a different path—see /blog/compress-photos-iphone. Broader cleanup: /blog/free-up-iphone-storage and /blog/reduce-iphone-storage.

Download and Keep Originals vs Optimize

Download and Keep Originals stores full-resolution photos and videos on the iPhone (and still syncs with iCloud Photos when that is on). That uses more local storage.

Optimize iPhone Storage keeps smaller local versions. You still see your library in Photos. Full originals download when needed if you have network access and the files are in iCloud. For managing the Storage screen overall, see /blog/manage-iphone-storage.

How Pikondo fits (and where it stops)

Pikondo is an on-device photo clutter review helper. Swipe to keep or mark screenshots, duplicates, and blurry shots, review the marked list, then confirm. Confirmed deletions follow the same Recently Deleted rules as the Photos app.

Pikondo does not turn on Optimize iPhone Storage, manage iCloud Photos, empty Recently Deleted, or bypass the 30-day album. Use Settings → Photos for Optimize. Use Pikondo when still-photo clutter is filling the phone and you want a careful review before more items land in Recently Deleted.

The key point

Optimize iPhone Storage keeps smaller local copies while originals stay in iCloud Photos. Turn it on in Settings → Photos after iCloud Photos is enabled and your iCloud plan has room. It does not delete clutter or empty Recently Deleted. Pikondo helps review photo clutter on the device. It does not manage Optimize, iCloud, or the 30-day Recently Deleted album.

Frequently asked questions

What does Optimize iPhone Storage do?
Optimize iPhone Storage is an iCloud Photos option. It keeps smaller versions of photos and videos on your iPhone while full-resolution originals stay in iCloud. When you open an item, iOS can download the full file if you have a network connection.
How do I turn on Optimize iPhone Storage?
Turn on iCloud Photos first. Then open Settings → Photos and choose Optimize iPhone Storage (instead of Download and Keep Originals). Wording can vary slightly by iOS version. Stay on Wi-Fi so uploads can finish.
Does Optimize iPhone Storage free iCloud storage?
No. Originals still live in iCloud Photos and count toward your iCloud plan. Optimize mainly reduces how much of the library sits at full resolution on the device. To free iCloud space, remove media you do not need (and empty Recently Deleted) or manage backups and other iCloud data—see /blog/free-up-icloud-storage.
Why is Optimize iPhone Storage not freeing space yet?
Large libraries need time and Wi-Fi to upload originals and replace local copies. If iCloud is full, sync can stall. Recently Deleted items and files you never remove also still use space. Check Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Photos after sync has had time to run.
Should I Optimize iPhone Storage or delete photos?
Optimize if you want to keep the full library in iCloud and free local device space over time. Delete (then empty Recently Deleted) if you do not need the files. Many people do both: delete obvious clutter first, then enable Optimize for what they keep.
Does Pikondo turn on Optimize iPhone Storage?
No. Pikondo helps you review and delete screenshots, duplicates, and blurry photos on the device. It does not turn on Optimize iPhone Storage, manage iCloud, empty Recently Deleted, or bypass the 30-day album. Use Settings → Photos for Optimize.
